“Never Wonder” BY: Joey He

I

The sea was buzzing and rolling under the radiant and enchanting sunshine. The waves were creeping and drenching the sand. The winding stone road via the beach extended to the home of the people who lived in the town. The sea breeze was lightly blowing towards the arbors on the island.

The wind was gently blowing to my white t-shirt and against my messy hair and my mind. My feet were caught in the golden sand, feeling the temperature of the nature, warm and soothing. I took off my shirt and could not wait to escape from the summer into the cool   sea. Cold ocean was surrounding me, I could easily feel her inexorability, Swimming was the only thing that could calm me down in the evil hot weather which makes people sweat and thirsty.

Dropping into the water, ripped through the mazarine blue ocean. The swimming posture as a fish, fluent and vigorous, that was a unique beauty, like returning to the arm of the merciful sea. My arms were full of irresistible energy to push the liquid and take deep breaths . I seemed to be born in the sea. The only image in my mind was the dolphin waving its tail and exploding the mystery.

A man wore a yellow waistcoat and orange beach short was surfing across the violent waves. The fluent line of the shoulder was taut, the perfect portion of the body and the strength of the muscle , it was really attractive. He was  imbued with power who could race with nature. The golden, messy, wet hair was shining under the sunlight and his body was shining with drops as well. The gentle waves were patting towards me, I dove into water again., in spite of people who stood around me and attracted by him.

The school was located on the busiest region in the island .The sound of chatting was full of the campus. I was one of the new member in this class who was a transferred student, I could not wait to join the school’s swimming team. It was the first time I was so impatient to rush out the classroom.

When the bell rang, I ran out of the door of class and directly to gymnasium. Some of the swimmers were already prepared to practice. I talked with the coach if I could join them.

“Of course you can, if you could present your skill later, it will be better.” Maxence said. He was walking to the front of me. The same face that I saw on that day, disorder hair, loose hoodie with short, the fiery eyes were staring at me. He was nearly ten centimeters taller than me.

I immediately took off my shirt and began to warm up. I was standing on the edge of the swimming pool and  was putting on the my swimming goggles. While I jumped into the water, I could feel like I was a dolphin ,which dove into the widen and deep sea.

One round that I had swam, ‘ Alright, you are in.’ His icy voice flowed through the water to my ears with no emotion on his face. Later, I relaxed and sat on the bench via the pool, seeing him standing on the diving platform, the obvious muscle humped, but his distant face showed that he felt relaxed.

The array of sprays were stirred by him when he dropped into the water. The powerful and vigorous arms stretch and ripped the liquid surrounding him. The violence of him liked a wild beast or a ferocious shark which was seeking its prey.

Every after school activity, Maxence participated in the training but I could only speak a few words with him. Until the competition was coming, I thought it was hard to catch up with my teammate, Although I was tired after classes, I kept practicing for the competition.

Once I dived into the water, I became oblivious to my surrounding, When I got up from the pool, I noticed that it was already in the evening. The sun was hiding in the end of the world and the stars was reflecting on the ground instead of the street lamps. The cloud was printed in modena, so that I planned to swim for the last turn. There were a few people in the pool, I swam nearly to the destination. Suddenly I felt pain on my feet, I was pulled  a muscle on my tendon. It was hard to grasp the edge of the pool.My head was covered by water, I desired for the air, fear came up to my mind. I tried to yell and flapped the water. It was useless, no one realized.

Unexpectedly, I was enclosed with a sturdy arm. I fell into a warm hug, then I was out of consciousness.

‘ Are you alright? Can you hear me?’ A sound asked impatiently while I was shaken. I opened my eyes, seeing Maxence purse up his bushy eyebrows.

‘”I am fine, I just choking the water. Thanks!” I replied.

From that day on, we became friends who promoted skills by helping each other. At the same time , the date on the calendar was closer and closer to the competition day.

Day by day, the members practiced over and over again for this moment.

Everyone was enthusiastic about the race, the audiences were cheering for their teams, the participants were warming up via the pool. The gymnasium was full of noise and people.

I was pretty nervous and excited as it was my first competition after I had joined in the team. I tried to cool down myself then I stood in a remote corner, so that no one would interrupt me. However, I saw Maxence directly walked out the gymnasium through the emergency door. But nobody realized. ‘Maybe he wanted to be dispassionate as well’ I thought.  So I walked away and got together with my team.

The competition began with the sound of cheering. All of them paid full of attention to the swimmers. The race was in full swing, the score between our school and the rival was similar. It was a decisive moment which determine whether we could win for the prize. Unfortunately, all of the members realized that Maxence was absent and they could not find him in every corner of the gymnasium.

I rushed into the emergency door and reached the top of the building, a thick smell of smoke filled my nose. He was sitting on the edge of the handrail and wearing headphones. I sat beside him slowly

“Are you alright? You can tell me anything if I can help you.” I said while he wanted to stand up.

“Honestly, I had manic-depressive psychosis. I would lost myself while being anxious or being expected .” He replied calmly.

“ You may try this, bro.” I gave him an earplug.

“You should hear only the sound from your bottom of heart, feeling your desire and enthusiasm of swimming, which was your original motive.”

“Let’s go, everyone is waiting for us” he stood up and took a deep breath.

No doubt that, we won with the effort of Maxence.

The sea breeze blew again. I dropped into the sea, feeling the gentle water stroking every part of my body. Also, I could feel the flow beside me, formidable and attractive.
