This is a simple village which located in south of the state, warm weather surrounding in whole year. People in the village including Peter are friendly. Peter has a father who once join the army, different from other came back victorious, he become a drunker and always beat his wife. Living in this condition, Peter deeply knows how effective the war is. his precocious let him have filial piety, he always helped his mom and do the housework in whatever he can.
But peaceful life was break by war. The Second World War started, and the state now is having conscription. Peter thought that he has the duty to contribute his force to the country. So, he ignored his fathers’ angry, resolutely he joined the army.
Weeks after Peter joined the army, they are going to prepare for get into the field, so the officer led them to the shooting gallery to practice their shooting skills. Everyone except the peter has picked upped the gun, getting ready to start. At this time, the officer found that he did not want to bring a gun into the field. The explanation given by peter was because of the religious beliefs, the soldiers laughed at him. At first, everyone did not care, and urged him to take the gun, but Peter insisted that he won’t pick it up and use it to kill people. The officer’s smile disappeared, he reprimanded peter, and punished him.
In the days that followed, Peter was constantly punished by the officers for not being willing to hold a gun to shoot. The soldiers also began to reject indifference to him. Eventually Peter became a medic. Mostly people think that he just wants to cover up his fear of guns, The soldiers looked down on him very much and began to bully him at night. Kendrick is very prestigious in the soldiers. He is the most capable person in the camp. He is also the one who detests peter most. He believes that men should be on the battlefield, use the gun to attack and that’s the way to serve the country. So, he often took people to play peter at night so that he could not sleep well. Peter didn’t as strong as them, and they were beaten him every night.But when the officer asked him whether he can point out the man who took part in beating him, he never filed a suit.Eventually Peter became a medic in this hellish military camp.
Peter struggled to pass though day by day. Soon the front line needed them to go to the battlefield. The first task they got was extraordinarily cruel and difficult: they must captured Okinawa and occupied four airports on the island.
On one afternoon three days later, Peter and the tens of thousands of soldiers landed on the beach, and a cliff was in front of them. They had to turn it over. The enemy set-ups heavy fire weapons behind the cliffs, causing them to suffer heavy losses at the beginning of the attack. They had to fall back, the enemy’s firepower was so strong that they could not even carry away the soldiers who injured that could not move. They had to leave the injured soldiers back to the bottom of the cliff.
As night fell, Peter dragged his tired body through the camp. After stabilizing the soldiers who injury, Peter found that only half of the soldiers were actually returned. Listening to the sound of mortars and gunshots in distant places, watching the enemy’s illumination flares from time to time on the cliff, tearing the dark night, he worried about the wounded soldiers on the cliff. He tried to convince the officers to take someone to bring them down, but unfortunately was severely stopped.
Peter decided to climb back to the cliff alone in the dark to save the soldiers who were thrown away as much as he can. On the cliff, he saw a soldier who was still awake, he went to dress him the wound, then immediately picked him up and put him down near the cliff, then plunged into the night to find the second wounded soldier. One after another, they were all bandaged by peter, and back to the cliff, including Kendrick.
After a dozen wounded soldiers were brought back to the edge of the cliff, Peter fell to the ground with tiredness. Feeling the pain of the hand, he kept telling himself: ‘Just save one more, just one more, you can do this, peter’ Then he struggled and went into the night again. So Peter returned with one soldier after another on his back. While he’s eyelid fighting, he faced a serious problem. Obviously these soldiers could not climb down the cliff by themselves. So, he found a large bundle of ropes, made a simple rope, tied the soldiers at one end, and used his whole body strength to hold at a rock, and put the soldier down slowly using his own hands. Soldiers who guard at the bottom of the cliff saw the soldiers were putted down one by one, they bring them back to the medical tent. Hours and hours, Peter’s hand had already been broken skin by thick hemp rope, and the casually wrapped fabric was already worn out, but Peter stick until he sent the last wounded solider he brought back. Unconsciously, the next morning had approaching, peter lie on the edge of the cliff, the strength of even moving a finger has gone.
In this night, Peter treated more than forty soldiers and rescued more than 30 lives by himself, including Kendrick, who had already lost too much blood. Since then, no one in the military camp has looked downed on Peter’s unwillingness to take a gun. They from then on never underestimate his belief. Kendrick also understood his original intention, and they reconciled and became comrades who help each other in the following battle.
When the war is over, he survived, but injured three times in the battles. He passed though the field without any weapon and saved 75 solider’s life in total, He was received the medal of Honor as the remarkable contribution when he came back to state. Every time when the people talk about his legend story, he always said that hero are the man who die for the sake of country. And he was just a lucky man.
